STARFLEET PRESS CORPS

The Starfleet Press Corps operates within the Office of Starfleet
Communication under the Starfleet Tactical Division.  In operation now for just
over 200 years, it is composed of Starfleet officers and non-commissioned
officers in the field writing reports from all over Starfleet; from news at
Starfleet Headquarters to the furthest research outpost.

The Starfleet Press Corps came into service in 2172, shortly after the
formation of the United Federation of Planets by Rear Admiral Daniel Chester,
the Deputy Director of Starfleet Communications at the time.  Chester had a
fondness of Earth combat journalists and was a member of Earth's History and
Information Cataloguing (HIC) team.

In 2165, in a small town outside of Boise, Idaho, a cache of paper-bound
magazines surfaced containing almost 200 issues of the former United States
military news magazine "Stars and Stripes."  Of the issues were many from
the second and third World Wars.  Chester ordered the magazines to be
sealed in the Federation Archives until the HIC could begin the pain-staking
process of restoring the paper magazines to their original condition.  The
restored versions are still on display today, 10 at a time, at the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington, Earth.

In 2171, when the Federation / Klingon war broke out, Chester ordered the
creation of a news service and ordered Starfleet correspondents in the field.
This ad-hoc reporting eventually turned into a weekly military periodical.  This
led to the creation of the Starfleet Press Corps.  It's first commanding Officer,
Captain James Mason, operating out of a briefing room on the USS Columbia,
an old NX-class starship, began organizing reports and distributing them on
frequencies for all Federation starships to listen in.

The Starfleet Press Corps received their first office in the Starfleet
Communications Center in Los Angeles, Earth in 2175, where it is still located.
In 2176, another office was opened on Mars.  In 2178, remote offices began to
open on Vulcan, Andor and Telar.  Today, the Starfleet Press Corps has offices
and remote headquarters on over 90 worlds and 15 starships.  In late 2173, the
Starfleet Press Corps opened its first office on Kronos.
