The Price of Peace

(USS Crossfield) The Locust doesn’t consider the merit of peace, nor does the
brain that drives the locust, it would seem.  The Dominion and their combined
subjugated races have, through the effective use of dark deceptions, and evil
alliances, reversed many of the hard won successes of the last few years.

The Changelings of the Dominion have destroyed all their smaller neighboring
populations of “solids” that they have encountered.  They only have experience
with those that either revered them as Gods or those that were easily
vanquished.  A review of their strategies to date shows that they attempted to
hold to these lessons of their history.  First, they attempted to divide the
peoples of the Alpha Quadrant and to set us upon each other.  They failed.  We
have been united as the “Uncowed and Fearless Peoples of the Alpha
Quadrant” to resist them, and they cannot play the same game that they know
so well.  And, now they are relying on their old strategies again.  Now, they have
found another weak group of dark-dwellers to bow down to them and to do their
bidding.  More locusts for the swarm to be guided by their evil need to further
corrupt the galaxy.  When they could not get us to destroy ourselves, they
found the Vorta, the Jem Haddar, the Cardassians, now the Breen to do their
bidding.

But it will not work for them.  Adding one more species into the swarm will not
change the outcome in the favor of the Dominion.  It will only stall their eventual
demise.  They simply have no strategy, no trickery to account for a hundred
species from across the Alpha Quadrant standing against them united in their
common desire to remain free.  They have seen the forces of the Klingon
Empire, Romulan Star Empire and the United Federation of Planets working
together and standing firm in their path to victory, and it has made them cringe
in fear.

Now, because of the recent cowardly attacks at Sol, there are a number of fear-
driven and ill-advised concepts being thrown around in the press.  Among the
most destructive of these notions is the idea that the Federation Alliance should
sue for peace with the Dominion.

I ask you to consider for a moment what that would look like from the
Changelings perspective.  Consider how they must change to live peacefully in
the Alpha Quadrant:  How could they maintain their God-Persona with free
civilizations on their borders?  How can they continue to get their people to
believe that it is appropriate to bow in the presence of the shape shifters with
subspace transmissions from free speakers constantly trickling through their
borders?  With trade inevitable across their subjugated races?  Perhaps as
permanent residents of the Alpha Quadrant, these Changelings will also have to
add the Chameloids and the Allasomorphs of Daled IV to their holy texts as
superior beings simply because they can also change their shapes.

How can the Changelings live here in peace at all with the diverse peoples of
the Alpha Quadrant?  They cannot.  They cannot because it would require them
to accept our sentience, our equality and our right to disagree with them.  The
Brain of the Locust has shown no ability to change their strategies, nor change
their desire to mindlessly conquer the galaxy.  Isn’t it ironic that the
“Changelings” cannot “change”?

I was on  Earth when it was attacked.  I saw firsthand the destruction that the
Locust brought to the Capital of the Federation.  I urge all of the readers of this
column to consider the cost of peace.  Consider what would happen if our agro
producers were asked not to shield their farms from the locust swarm.  And,
most of all consider those brave and diverse people who are putting
themselves in harm’s way for our collective safety.

Over the course of the next few months, I will be writing my column from
among these brave warriors protecting us from the swarm of locusts.  I will
chronicle the advances and setbacks from aboard the USS Crossfield as it
pushes the Dominion back to the Gamma Quadrant, and I will be unafraid in their
courageous company.
