Trust in Morale

(USS Crossfield) The key with morale is trust.  SF puts a lot of effort and
expense into solid medical facilities because history has shown that if a soldier
believes he will receive medical attention quickly, he is more likely to put
himself in harm's way.  They trust that their fellow soldiers will give them the
medical attention they deserve.  They trust that the guy next to them will pick
them up and carry them away from danger.  They trust each other.  They trust
their subordinates.  They trust their leadership.  And, they trust us as citizens to
support them during and after the war.

If you trust the people you're with and know that they are good people, you're
far more likely to feel good about whatever it is you're doing as a group
endeavor. If you don't trust the people you're with, it's really hard to work as a
team and it's easy to lose your head.  Conversely, if you see someone you trust
doing something that is wrong, it causes you to question your own values and
beliefs.

Morale in wartime is a tricky thing.  War sharpens the mind like no other activity
we engage in.  It does so necessarily because we Humanoids share a nearly
common desire to remain among the living.  Yet, it also puts the stability of the
mind in jeopardy.  War is a morose and difficult undertaking.  An endeavor that
has, on occasion, bereft civilizations of entire generations through casualties
and mental defect.  We do not take war lightly, but we engage in it because the
failure to engage in it would cost us more than the morale and mental well being
of a generation.  It may very well cost us all of the generations to come.

So, a tricky balance must be struck.  We must allow this Dominion War access to
our collective psyche to sharpen us into the tools that will ensure our
continuation in the galaxy.  But, we must also remember the lighter side of our
lives.  The fun and frivolity that makes living worth the effort.  Failing to balance
both of these inevitably leads to a lost generation of heroes.  Or worse, the
creation of a generation of potential villains.  I mention this because war can
lead a normally happy person down a dark and ugly path.  Thankfully, SF has in
its wisdom sent its fleets into the fight armed with councilors that can help our
soldiers maintain the healthy and necessary balance.

I'm not a military man.  But, I know enough history to know that when you have
your enemy on their heels (the way the Federation Alliance does now) is the
time to press your attack forward.  I do know a bit about the Humanoid mind,
however.  So, I would like to interject the idea that now is the time to forestall
the difficulties that our returning soldiers will inevitably have as they return
from War's desolation.

I urge all of my readers to send a message to someone they know in the fleet.
Or, to find a person they don't know in the fleet, and remind them of the fun they
are protecting.  Show them a child's finger-painting of a starship that has been
fixed to the home replicator PADD.  Tell them a joke.  Do this because they are
putting their minds in harm's way as well as their bodies.  And it is our collective
duty to help them preserve both.
