Utopia’s destruction “An Act of War”

MARS: It apparently didn’t take much effort for a Romulan agent, disguised as a
Vulcan Starfleet Engineer, to waltz onto five Federation starships and plant
undetectable devises to the anti-matter containers stored on those ships. This, in
the middle of one of Starfleet’s highest security areas. The results of this attack
were clear. At 10:00 hours yesterday, 3 of the devices went off.
“An attack of sabotage of this magnitude is clearly an act of war.” This was the
quote by Admiral Franklin Marcus Coburn, the Director of Starfleet Engineering,
commanding the rescue and recovery efforts on the bridge of the USS Concord.
Just yesterday morning, the Admiral was having coffee with Rear Admiral Diana
Furrow, the Commanding Officer of Utopia Planitia, Starfleet’s massive advanced
shipyard and one of its leading research and development facilities. The two had
discussed some exciting projects on the horizon and the status of current projects
already underway at the facility just one ecliptic from Earth. Today, Furrow is
dead, along with over 1900 of her co-workers. The facility is in ruins and six
starships have either been destroyed or crippled in the attack.
With all of its representatives being recalled from the August break, the
Federation council is scheduled to convene this afternoon to discuss possible
retaliation. However, Federation President Jonathan Paul was clear that more
evidence will need to be found before such a decision could be made. “The
preliminary report presented by Admiral (William) Ross clearly shows a security
breach by one individual. But we need to know if this was coordinated, who
coordinated it and at what scale the operation existed. We need to know all this
before making such an important accusation.” However, sources close to the
investigation at Starfleet Tactical in Los Angeles have stated that evidence existed
that such a breach had already happened, as recently as two weeks ago
culminating from a civilian freighter crash site on a Plutonian storage facility at the
edge of the system. The sources chose to remain anonymous as they did not have
permission to talk about the investigation.
This morning, Starfleet Tactical and Federation Security geared up for one of the
largest forensic investigations in recent Federation history. With a debris field
spreading out many thousands of cubic kilometers, three starships and an
unknown number of auxiliary craft begin the task of collecting evidence. Key in
their search efforts will be the recovery of starship and facility computer cores. “If
we can find computer cores in such a state where information can be obtained
from them, like internal sensor records, for instance, it’ll certainly help piece
together this attack,” says Master Chief Petty Officer Daniel Xiang, the commander
of one of the shuttlecraft involved in the search and rescue efforts.
Starfleet has already provided a likely scenario that destroyed the facility. Three
starships had catastrophic anti-matter breaches that destroyed their surrounding
facilities. The USS Reliant, was docked next to the main orbital facility when it
erupted, taking out the massive complex with it, which began a chain-reaction of
crippling hull breaches along the web-like orbital facility. These explosions caused
severe peripheral damage to other starships docked helplessly nearby. The
explosion of the USS Lamarck, for instance, completely enveloped its neighboring
ship USS Tolstoy. Another ship nearby, the USS Tempest, escaped by engaging in a
blind warp, which, in turn, crippled that ship and destroyed the facility it was
docked to.
One hero in the attack has already received high praise from Admiral Coburn.
Lieutenant junior grade Jack Wise, the Junior Starship Security Officer stationed
onboard the USS Concord, immediately identified the catastrophe for what it was
and ordered the beaming of Utopia staff off of the facility while easing the
Concord away at impulse power. He’s credited with both saving the Concord,
which was moderately damaged by an explosion, as well as hundreds of station
personnel. He was eventually replaced as more senior officers arrived. “(LT(jg)
Wise) certainly saved our lives,” says Lieutenant Commander Tiberius Pike, one of
the engineering staff assigned to Utopia during the attack. Captain of Engineering
Blakaar Relldon also commented on LT(jg) Wise, saying, “A quick-thinking kid. I
owe him one!”
Two other devises were planted but did not go off. One was found after the
attack on the USS Integrity, docked at Utopia for a major upgrade. The other
devise was found onboard the USS Kusanagi which had departed Utopia days
before. Captain Erika Rodman, commanding officer of the Kusanagi, was ordered
to return to Earth with the device, found by her engineering staff just minutes
before the devise was set to go off. Warnings from the Kusanagi arrived too late
to prevent the disaster. It is unknown if any other devices were planted but
Starfleet expects to find out as the salvage operation continues, likely to take two
weeks to finish. Starfleet Tactical is not releasing any details on the devises or
how the devises went undetected by internal sensors which are supposed to
automatically alert the crew when explosives are found on the ship at any time.
