UNITED FEDERATION OF PLANETS - PRESS AND INFORMATION
The United Federation of Planets (UFP) Press and Information (P&I)
department is a division of the Office of Federation Communications and
provides news, commentary, alerts and general information to all members
and colonies of the United Federation of Planets. It was created in 2161 just
after the formation of the UFP. Created to provide news and information about
member worlds to all four members of the UFP, P&I has grown into the most
listened to broadcast service in the Milky Way. P&I is based in San Francisco
on Earth but has offices located on all Federation worlds, colonies and many
stations and outposts.
In 2190, P&I began to move towards a more journalistic approach to reporting,
taking an active role in the press within the UFP and what drove it. Though it
kept its broadcasting branch, by 2370, P&I had over 10,000 reporters
throughout the Federation and its allies. The broadcasting branch of P&I is
now the smallest component of the government organization.
In 2290, talk began about privatizing P&I. Debate within the Federation Council
began that P&I could potentially be used as a propaganda arm of a corrupt
leadership. Discussions went back and forth about how to handle the issue.
In 2301, it was decided to split up P&I into two organizations, one of which
would eventually become UFB, or the United Federation Bureau.
The current Director of P&I is former legal reporter Owen McMasters. Mr.
McMasters is only the second Director who rose through the ranks at P&I as a
reporter. McMasters earned a law degree from Harvard, making law review in
2331. After a short yet successful career, he chose to break away from law
and began legal reporting for P&I in 2340. In 2352 he became Associate Editor
and then Editor in 2356. In 2365, he was made Editor-in-Chief for the entire
news outlet. McMasters has been Director since 2369.
