ALPHA OMICRON V
The planet of Alpha Omicron V is a colony world of the United Federation of
Planets nestled in the Alpha Orion cluster near the Orion Nebula. It was
established in 2266 with a single city, Omicron. With the exception of various
agricultural settlements, occasional rural villages and an assortment of
factories and advanced foundries, a vast majority of the citizens remained in
Omicron.

The planet is in the Alpha Omicron system and is in the sixth Kepler ecliptic,
though with the absence of a second planet in the system, it is considered
only to be the fifth planet. The Alpha Omicron star is a G-IV yellow subgiant
star. Despite the star’s mass and luminosity, Alpha Omicron V sits close
to the outer border of the star’s biozone (in the sixth ecliptic) giving the
planet a cooler climate. The average mean temperature at the equator is
about 10 degrees C (50 F). With an axel tilt of only 4 degrees, there is very
little in the way of seasonal variation or about 10 degrees C plus or minus).
Snow at the equator is frequent in the winter. Seasons on the planet last a
very long time as the Alpha Omicron V year is 8.8 Earth years. The planet
rotates much slower than Earth, at about 36.24 hours. Because of the daily
variation, the planet lives on a five-day week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday,
Saturday and Sunday) with 36 hour days and a “leap day every forth
day that has an extra hour. The remaining leftover time is augmented every
other year consisting of a “leap year containing an extra day,
celebrated as a holiday called “Our Saturday.
The planet has three large continents (Aquarius in the northwest hemisphere,
Sagittarius in the Northeast hemisphere and Taurus on the South Pole) and
two sub-continents (Virgo in the Southeast hemisphere and Leo in the
Northwest hemisphere), with a land-to-ocean ratio of 19-to-81 percent. It has
an equatorial diameter of 14,771 km (about 115% of Earth). The city of
Omicron is about 22 km wide and sits about 2 degrees north of the equator on
the southeastern tip of the Aquarius continent on a delta between the inlets of
two major rivers. In the distance over the sea, the western tip of the Leo sub-
continent can be seen from the higher buildings of Omicron. The climate of
Omicron is cool with an average summer temperature of a 15 C high, 6 C low.
The winter is 6 C high, -12 C low. The fall and the spring averages to be 9 C
high, -1 C low. Omicron, with its proximity to the ocean, is subject to
occasional winds and frequent precipitation in the form of rain, sleet or snow
about two days of the five day week. The slow rotation of the planet prevents
violent storms such as hurricanes or cyclones and very little in the way of
trade winds or jet streams. The planet has no weather control satellite
system. It has one, small natural satellite, Alpha Omicron V-a named Pieces,
and a huge captured asteroid on an erratic orbit named Vixen. Vixen is
expected to be crushed when reaching Alpha Omicron V’s Roche limit in
3915, showering the Sagittarius continent with debris unless its orbit is
modified before 3912.
Rich mineral finds have been located on the Virgo sub-continent, though the
area is strewn with wild animals and has three major, active volcanoes. The
population of the entire Virgo sub-continent is less than 30,000. The
Sagittarius continent is home to a rich evergreen-like forest covering 8/10ths
of the entire continent with an over-abundance of forest-dwelling wild-life.
The Aquarius continent is home to large mountain ranges and vast grassy
plains. The largest mountains on the planet are located here, reaching about
10,000 km in height, as the Aquarius continent used to be two separate sub-
continents that collided together millions of years ago. The Leo sub-continent
is mostly desert-like in the south with occasional patches of snow, ice and
glacier formations in the north. Everywhere is a bed of permafrost under the
wind-driven sands from the southern desert. The Taurus continent is one
huge glacier overflowing into the southern polar ocean making up a frozen
ocean covering roughly 3/5ths of the southern hemisphere.
Now boasting a population of 12 million (2370 census), only about 500,000
people live outside the city. Roughly 95% of the population is Human, with
other key demographics of 0.4% Nausicaan and 0.2% Vulcan. The city of
Omicron ranks only 335 of the largest populated cities in the United Federation
of Planets. In 2361, construction completed on a second city on the Leo
continent called Leon. Migration to Leon has been slow, however, attracting a
mere 48,000 people mostly from the public sector.

The people of Omicron live in a 36 hours day which takes getting used to.
Typically, the average person sleeps 12 hours a day, from 17:00 PM to 8:00
AM. The workday begins at 10:00 AM and lasts 12 to 14 hours until 4:00 to 6:00
PM depending on lunch hours (typically from 16:00 AM to 18:00 PM. The
workdays are Monday to Friday with Saturday and Sunday off. Work weeks
are typically 36 to 42 hours a week.
Alpha Omicron V main exports, technologies and output includes commercial
endeavors (22%), seafood (20%), tungsten (19%), iron (6%), platinum (4%),
timber (2%), aerospace (2%), government (2%) and all other production (23%).
Apart from commercial output, Alpha Omicron V is the leading producer of raw
tungsten in the Federation. It is also, by far, the largest exporter of natural
seafood in the Alpha Orion cluster. Colony law prevents over-exploitation of
the vast forest from the Sagittarius continent. Otherwise, Alpha Omicron V
would also be a leading producer of timber in the Federation.
